Travel Log 9-30: Wendnesday Wake Me Up

Like last week I'm dragging today. So while I try to ressussitate my brain I'll let you in on my research for today.
Where did the term "cute as a bug's ear" come from. I don't know of any bugs that have ears. And if the did, due to the whole exoskeleton thing I'm not leaning towards what ears they would have being particularly attractive. So why do we say this?

Here's my theory- I think someone was drunk.

And with October literally right next door, and most of us having little witchlets wandering about, I thought I would look up all the old kid friendly halloween flicks I loved as a kid.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
Arsenic and Old Lace
It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
The Worst Witch (My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!)
The Witches ( I loved the book too)
Bed knobs and Broomsticks
The Nightmare Before Christmas (goes almost without saying really)
Casper ( I had such a crush on the kid who played casper)
The Black Cauldron
The Canterville Ghost (the 1986 one with Alyssa Milano is the one I remember best, but the original was    pretty good too)

I hope I can find some of these on DVD for my kids, cause they made the holiday for me when I was a kid!

  1. Arsenic and old lace is great! I have laughed as hell when I have seen it:) Also the NBC. I know the Canterville ghost only as a short story but still great for October!

  2. The movie is based off the short story by Oscar Wilde. There have been a few versions actually, starting with an old black and white one in the 40's. '44 I think.
Arsenic and Old Lace has been a personal favorite for some time. I made my Other Half watch it shortly after we started dating, because apparently he was raised in some sort of sadistic enclave and had never heard of Gary Cooper. He ended up loving it, lol.

  3. Gary Cooper? lol

I've never heard the saying: Cute as a bug's ear.

I've also not heard of half of those movies on your list.

    Sorry :-P

  4. Don't tell me you don't know who Gary Cooper is???
What are they teaching kids these days..And now I sound like a crotchity old woman, lol.

Watch them..they are great classic Halloween flicks. The Worst Witch even has a song by Tim Curry in it! These are the movies that I used to wait for October to roll around to watch. I loooved them!

  5. First of all, I am so looking forward to fabulous holiday movies.

Secondly, thanks for the additional comment regarding the "little warriors" (violent boy children)!

  6. Well...what a coincidence...I am reading The Worst Witch for the bedtime story right kids love the books.
As usual the books are so much better...mind you the T.V. series which was done years ago is better than the film.
We do watch the film though as a daft treat...and sing the Tim and Diana...(though I prefer the first T.V. Hardbroom) she's so much "Harder".

As for the bug thing...yep they must have been sozzled!

  7. I think your post hit home with me today, bigtime! Just an hour ago, I said to my husband, I'm going to bake treats and put on It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

There's quite a few movies on your list that I have not seen, but also: I love Hocus Pocus! It's kitchy, but cute :)

Cute as a bugs ear. Poor person had to be drunk while coining the saying...probably saw some ears on a lady bug. LOL I always wondered...

Devon Sawa played the boy in Casper. MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!

    Much Love,

  8. Wendy : W00t!! that rocks!
Celia: There are books??? I must have! and a TV series, man you guys in the UK get the best stuff.
MG: Hocus Pocus was good too, can't believe I forgot to add it to the list, lol. I love Bette!
And Devon Sawa was right up there with Jonathan Brandis in my adolescent crush list, lol.

  9. LMAO...drunkeness, eh?
Hey, that works for me too. :D
